Second Post: Direct Instruction

Direct instruction is a teacher centered teaching method. It is characterized by teacher guidance and control, high expectations for student progress, maximum effective time for students’ theoretical learning, and minimum negative effects. Teachers choose learning tasks for students, guide students how to complete learning tasks, and minimize non-academic interactions. At the same time, they implement strong teacher guidance and control, and set high performance standards to require students to reach that. Generally speaking, there are six steps for direct instruction: 1. Introduction or review 2. Present the new material 3. Guided practice 4. Feedback and correctives 5. Independent practice 6. Evaluation and review. In my opinion, this teaching method does not match our topic. Our topic is Artificial Intelligence. Our students is middle school students. Our purpose is to introduce the AI to them, and stimulate their interest about AI. I want to discuss why this method is unsuitable for our topic based on the six steps and the progress about our class.

We have four steps in our class: 1. Represent some examples about AI in real life. 2. Discuss the advanatages about AI 3. Present the work progress about AI. 4. Lead students to look at AI from various viewpoints.

Firstly, introduction is necessary, and our main point is introduction. We can tell the progress about our class, and we can represent some examples about AI in real life to stimulate students’ interest about AI. Secondly, presenting the material. Our main material include the advantages about AI and work progress about AI. They are mostly non-academic knowledge. However, direct instruction request maximize the academic knowledge learning time. Thirdly, we do not have practice. I suppose that practice is a little boring. Finally, we would like to lead students to have their own opinion about AI. In general, this method does not match our class. There are three steps about direct instruction, which we can not satisfy.
